The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research has estimated substantial rare earth mineral resources within India. As of January 28, 2026, approximately 13.15 million tonnes of monazite have been identified across eight states in deposits found in beach sands and hard rocks.
These significant findings encompass about 7.23 million tonnes of rare earth oxide resources, primarily located in coastal areas and inland alluvium in states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, hard rock deposits in Rajasthan and Gujarat hold further reserves of rare-earth minerals.
Monazite, a key source of rare earths and thorium, is a controlled substance due to its radioactive elements. India holds a strong global position in rare-earth sector capabilities, including plant, technology, and skilled workforce. However, commercial extraction and processing have been historically constrained by technological limitations and a lack of mid-stream and downstream industries within the value chain.
