India's Near-Space Leap: Startup Flies Balloon Mission
27 May
Summary
- A Hyderabad-based startup achieved commercial flight in eight months.
- The mission utilized a super-pressure balloon reaching 25 kilometers altitude.
- Payloads from seven partners were successfully tested on the mission.

Red Balloon Aerospace, a Hyderabad-based startup founded in 2025, has successfully launched India's first indigenous private super-pressure balloon, Mission SANA. Within eight months of its founding, the company achieved operational commercial flight, marking a significant leap for India's private space sector. The VISTA platform ascended to approximately 25 kilometers above Earth, an underutilized stratospheric zone.
Mission SANA carried payloads from seven partners, including biological experiments and earth observation sensors, all of which completed their objectives. This success places India among five nations with indigenous stratospheric hydrogen balloon capability. The super-pressure design allows for extended stable flight, offering persistent observation and communication.
This technology aims to fill a gap between aircraft and satellites, providing high-resolution imaging and flexible deployment at lower costs. Red Balloon Aerospace plans to develop integrated stratospheric infrastructure for communications and earth observation, utilizing a shared rideshare model for affordability.
