Summary
- India's first indigenous process for HFO refrigerants developed.
- HFOs offer zero ozone depletion and low global warming.
- Technology ready for industry transfer to boost domestic manufacturing.

CSIR-IICT in Hyderabad has successfully developed India's inaugural indigenous process technology for producing hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs). This breakthrough offers a new class of refrigerants designed to substitute current high-global-warming hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in essential applications like air conditioners and refrigerators.
The laboratory-scale HFO-1234yf technology platform, entirely developed in India, is now prepared for seamless transfer to the chemical industry. This advancement allows domestic manufacturers to produce next-generation refrigerants, utilizing readily available raw materials and reducing reliance on imported technologies.
HFO-1234yf stands out globally for its superior environmental profile, boasting zero ozone depletion potential and a significantly shorter atmospheric lifetime compared to HFCs. This initiative aligns with India's commitment to green technologies and the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) mission, aiming for import substitution and bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities.
India's ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol underscores its dedication to phasing down HFCs. The nation plans a phased reduction starting in 2032, with cumulative targets set for 2032, 2037, 2042, and 2047. This transition is projected to prevent millions of tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global climate goals.
