- This breakthrough significantly reduces steps and chemical waste in synthesis.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay have achieved a significant breakthrough in synthetic chemistry, developing an efficient new method to convert abundant, straight-chain carbon compounds into complex ring-shaped molecules. This advancement addresses a long-standing challenge in the field, where such transformations traditionally involved time-consuming and costly multi-step processes.
The novel technique, led by Prof Debabrata Maiti, utilizes a specially developed chemical compound to selectively target specific carbon atoms in long chains. This precision allows for the conversion to occur in fewer steps and with considerably less chemical waste. The research team demonstrated the method's versatility by synthesizing over ten biologically and industrially relevant molecules, including muricatacin, a compound with known anti-cancer properties found in soursop.
This platform technology has far-reaching implications for drug discovery and the chemical industry. It promises to accelerate the development of new medicines, potentially aiding in the study and improvement of compounds used in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda. The efficiency of this method could also make drug development faster, more economical, and environmentally sustainable.
