Ig Nobels Move to Europe Amid Visa Concerns
10 Mar
Summary
- Annual Ig Nobels relocating from US to Europe for the first time.
- Visa concerns cited by organizers as the reason for the move.
- Zurich, Switzerland, will host the 36th ceremony this year.

For the first time in its history, the Ig Nobel Prize ceremony is relocating from the United States to Europe. Organizers cited concerns over visa accessibility for attendees as the primary reason for this shift. The 36th annual event, celebrating scientific achievements that initially make people laugh and then think, is scheduled to take place in Zurich, Switzerland.
Previously held annually in the U.S. in September, the move addresses safety and logistical challenges for international guests and journalists. Master of Ceremonies Marc Abrahams noted that traveling to the US has become unsafe for guests. The ceremony, organized by the Annals of Improbable Research, has a history of honoring quirky scientific studies, such as those on zebra-striped cows or lizard pizza preferences.
This year's Zurich ceremony is a collaboration with Swiss Federal Institute of Technology institutions and the University of Zurich. It is planned to be held in Zurich every other year, with other European cities hosting in alternate years. Past ceremonies have been held at prestigious U.S. universities like Harvard and MIT.
