Elusive Marten Study Reveals Forest Threats
24 Feb
Summary
- Humboldt martens are crucial for ecosystem balance.
- Remote cameras aided the study of elusive martens.
- Coastal forests vital for martens face threats.

Humboldt martens, essential for maintaining ecosystem balance by preying on smaller mammals, have historically inhabited coastal forests across Northern California and Oregon. However, they now occupy only 5% of their former range and are listed as endangered in California and federally threatened.
A recent study in Northern California utilized remote cameras and hair snares to estimate the population and distribution of these elusive creatures. Researchers identified 46 individual martens and estimated a total population of 111 within the study area. This research highlights the species' critical reliance on old-growth forests.
These specific forest types are under significant threat from climate change, which exacerbates wildfire frequency and intensity. Furthermore, particular forest management practices also pose a risk to these vital habitats. Understanding the distribution and demography of Humboldt martens remains a priority for ongoing conservation efforts.
