With fewer than 2,000 yellow-crested cockatoos remaining globally, Hong Kong has emerged as a potential stronghold for the critically endangered species. Researchers from the University of Hong Kong discovered that the city's introduced population exhibits unexpectedly high genetic diversity. This genetic richness could serve as a vital backup for the species, which faces severe threats from trapping and habitat loss in its native Indonesia and East Timor.
Surprisingly, these snowy-white birds have adapted to urban Hong Kong, making bustling city parks like Victoria Park and Hong Kong Park their primary habitats. They find ample food sources and suitable nesting sites in the mature trees within these urban oases. To aid their survival, researchers are collaborating with arborists to install artificial nest boxes, particularly in areas where natural nesting sites have been lost.
The initiative has also engaged local schools, fostering awareness among students. At St. Louis School, artificial nest boxes were installed, leading to increased cockatoo activity and even a student award-winning photograph of a cockatoo returning to a nest. These efforts highlight a growing community involvement in the conservation of this unique urban wildlife, with at least one chick having successfully hatched in an artificial nest.
