Summary
- Hair stylists are emerging as influential figures in climate change discussions.
- Salons are trusted spaces ideal for promoting climate action and sustainable habits.
- Nearly all participating salons reported client chats on environmental topics, boosting eco-consciousness.

UK hairdressers are emerging as significant, yet overlooked, influencers in addressing the climate crisis. A study highlights that salons are trusted community spaces where influential conversations about global warming can effectively take root.
Researchers found that hairdressers, through their trusted relationships with clients, can facilitate discussions on climate change. Interventions using 'Mirror Talkers' in 25 salons showed that nearly all reported client conversations expanding from haircare to broader environmental topics like plastic use and diet.
These conversations prompted nearly three-quarters of clients to consider changing their haircare routines, with some switching to eco-friendly products. Scientists advocate for recognizing public-facing professionals like hairdressers as 'everyday influencers' crucial for climate engagement across the UK.
Recent weather patterns, including a significantly wetter and duller February, have been attributed by experts partly to global warming. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, leading to heavier rainfall events, a trend observed in the UK and globally over recent decades.
