Gut Bacteria Supercharge Muscle Strength, Study Finds
21 Aug
Summary
- Roseburia inulinivorans bacteria linked to stronger grip.
- Mice with the bacteria showed increased muscle strength.
- Dietary fiber supports beneficial gut microbes for muscle health.

The trillions of microbes residing in the human gut are increasingly recognized for their significant impact on overall health, influencing everything from immunity to mental well-being. Emerging research now highlights a potential connection between these gut microbes and muscle strength, a critical component for maintaining independence and physical function throughout life.
A recent investigation explored this link by analyzing the gut microbiomes of young and older adults. Scientists identified a specific bacterium, Roseburia inulinivorans, whose higher abundance correlated with greater muscle strength, particularly in handgrip tests. This observation prompted further research in mice.
In controlled experiments, mice introduced to Roseburia inulinivorans exhibited enhanced grip strength and larger muscle fibers. The study suggests this bacterium may influence how muscle cells utilize energy, potentially aiding in muscle performance. Older adults in the human study generally had lower levels of this bacterium, mirroring the age-related decline in muscle strength.
While the exact direction of this relationship in humans requires more investigation, the mouse studies provide compelling evidence for a direct role of R. inulinivorans in boosting muscle power. This opens avenues for future research into probiotics designed to support muscle function in aging populations.
Diet plays a crucial role in nurturing beneficial gut bacteria. Prebiotic fibers, found abundantly in foods like onions, garlic, and asparagus, serve as fuel for these microbes. Encouraging a healthy gut microbiome through a high-fiber diet is advisable for overall health and may contribute to maintaining muscle strength. Current advice emphasizes regular exercise and a fiber-rich diet for optimal muscle health and a thriving microbiome.
