A mysterious green fireball captivated hundreds across the western United States recently. The meteor was first observed over Chowchilla, traveling at approximately 35,000 mph. It streaked 58 miles through the upper atmosphere before breaking apart about 29 miles above Calflax.
More than 300 individuals in California, Nevada, and Arizona reported the vibrant event to the American Meteor Society. Witnesses described the sight as unlike anything they had seen before, with some initially mistaking it for a missile or firework due to its intensity.
A loud boom accompanied the meteor's appearance, a result of the shockwave created as it compressed air. Residents reported a thunderous noise that shook their homes. This was at least the third such fireball observed in US skies within the past week, following incidents over Texas and states in the Northeast.
