Summary
- Juvenile great white shark found off Spain's coast in April 2023.
- 62 historical great white shark occurrences documented in Spanish waters.
- Great white shark survival linked to Atlantic bluefin tuna populations.

Great white sharks, long considered a ghost of the Mediterranean, are showing signs of presence in Spanish waters. A juvenile shark, measuring 6.9 feet and weighing 187 pounds, was accidentally captured off Spain's eastern coast in April 2023. This event prompted a study that uncovered 62 documented occurrences of these elusive apex predators in Spanish waters dating back to 1862.
The study suggests that great white sharks may use Spanish waters as a transient corridor, particularly during spring and summer, following their prey, the Atlantic bluefin tuna. The survival of great white sharks in the Mediterranean is closely tied to the health of bluefin tuna populations. Therefore, protecting tuna in Spanish waters is considered vital for the sharks' future.
While the Mediterranean great white shark population is classified as Critically Endangered, with estimates suggesting an 80 percent decline over 69 years, these new sightings offer a glimmer of hope. The possibility that the juvenile shark found was born in Spanish waters, rather than migrating from other nurseries, could signify a significant development for conservation efforts in the region.
