Summary
- A giant fungus, Dianjunus rex, was discovered in China.
- This fungus can grow up to 20 inches tall and weigh nearly 5 pounds.
- Its family likely emerged after the dinosaur extinction event.

A spectacular new species of giant fungus, named Dianjunus rex, has been identified in China. This colossal fungus, which can grow up to 20 inches tall and weigh nearly 5 pounds, has been found in southwestern China's Yunnan province. Its discovery highlights the immense biodiversity yet to be cataloged by science.
Scientists have placed Dianjunus rex within a newly identified family of fungi, Dianjunaceae. Genetic analysis suggests this fungal lineage emerged approximately 1 million years after the mass extinction event that ended the Cretaceous Period 66 million years ago. This period of widespread environmental disruption and accumulation of organic matter may have facilitated the evolution of such large fungi.
Dianjunus rex is now the largest known member of the phylum Ascomycota, a diverse group including morels and yeasts. Researchers are investigating why this species developed such large reproductive structures, or stromata, potentially as a strategy to better disperse its spores above dense forest floor debris.
Fungi play a critical role in Earth's ecosystems, contributing to the carbon cycle and supporting plant health. With estimates suggesting millions of fungal species remain undiscovered, Dianjunus rex serves as a potent reminder of the hidden biological richness on our planet.
