Genes Influence Personality: A Complex Web
28 Oct
Summary
- 1,260 genetic variants linked to personality aspects discovered.
- Thousands more variants influence the 'Big Five' traits.
- Genes show overlap with mental health and substance abuse risks.
A comprehensive study has identified 1,260 distinct genetic variants associated with various aspects of personality. This research, involving over a million individuals, highlights that personality is shaped by thousands of common genetic differences, each contributing a small amount. These genetic influences, alongside environmental factors, collectively mold who a person becomes.
The study also found genetic connections between personality traits and health behaviors. For instance, genes linked to neuroticism correlated with a higher risk of mental health issues, while conscientiousness was associated with reduced substance use and increased exercise frequency.
Despite these significant findings, common genetic variants explained only 5% to 9% of personality differences. Researchers emphasize that DNA influences, rather than determines, personality and future choices. These discoveries offer new avenues for understanding the links between personality and health.
