As part of a dedicated nine-year breeding program, 32 of these unique amphibians were recently released into a secluded mountainous area in Catalonia, Spain. This location was kept secret to safeguard the newts from disturbances and potential diseases. Each released newt is equipped with UV markers, allowing conservationists to monitor their movements and the effectiveness of the reintroduction initiative.
Beyond the recent release, the zoo continues to provide care for over 100 Montseny brook newts. Twelve breeding pairs are housed in specialized pods, contributing to the ongoing breeding program. These fascinating, visually hunting newts, known for their large eyes and aquatic lifestyle, are a focus of intense conservation efforts aimed at securing their future.
