Dreams Make Sleep Feel Deeper, Study Finds
25 Mar
Summary
- Vivid dreams can make sleep feel deeper and more restorative.
- Sleep quality may depend on dream immersion, not just brain waves.
- Dream therapies could improve perceived sleep quality.

New findings suggest that the vividness and immersion of dreams significantly contribute to the feeling of deep sleep. For years, deep sleep was characterized by a "switched off" brain with minimal activity. However, research analyzing brain activity in 44 adults using EEG indicates that people often report their deepest sleep not only when unconscious but also following immersive dream experiences.
This study, conducted by researchers at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, indicates that the quality of mental activity during sleep is key. Participants reported shallower sleep associated with lighter, fragmented thoughts. Conversely, more immersive dreams were linked to a deeper sense of rest, even when biological markers suggested otherwise.
These results may alter how sleep quality is assessed, moving beyond objective markers like brain waves and sleep stages to include subjective experiences. The findings also suggest that if dream quality influences perceived sleep depth, future therapies might target dream experiences to improve sleep health and mental well-being.
