Dog Pain: Subtle Signs Owners Miss Daily
2 Apr
Summary
- Vets identified 17 subtle signs indicating canine pain.
- Many owners fail to recognize behaviors like yawning and nose licking.
- Recognizing pain early can prevent aggression and improve well-being.

Vets from Utrecht University have unveiled 17 subtle indicators that signal a dog is experiencing pain. While some signs, such as changes in playfulness or hesitant paw lifting, are apparent, others are less obvious. These include behaviors like excessive nose licking, yawning, and air sniffing, which nearly half of dog owners fail to recognize.
The study involved 530 dog owners and 117 non-owners who completed questionnaires and analyzed case studies. Participants were most adept at identifying movement-related pain signs like limping. However, subtle behavioral shifts such as increased nighttime restlessness and clinginess were frequently overlooked.
Researchers emphasize that recognizing these subtle signs is vital. They can serve as early warnings for potential aggression, as dogs in pain may react unpredictably to stimuli. Identifying pain early allows owners to seek appropriate care and can mitigate behaviors perceived as undesirable.
The findings suggest that considering pain as a potential cause for a dog's behavior, rather than assuming it's due to boredom or disobedience, can lead to earlier intervention and better animal welfare.
