Deep Voice, No Romance: Study Debunks Myth

Summary
- Deep voices signal strength and dominance, not romantic appeal.
- Women didn't rate deeper voices as more attractive visually.
- Vocal masculinity had minimal impact compared to appearance.
A study by Durham University researchers, published in Royal Society Open Science on September 23, 2026, indicates that a deep voice may signal dominance but not necessarily romantic appeal. Previous research often relied on audio alone, but this new experiment included visual elements.
In the first experiment, 17 men's voices were digitally altered. Heterosexual women rated attractiveness, while others judged strength and social dominance. Results showed that while deeper voices enhanced perceptions of strength and dominance, they did not significantly boost attractiveness ratings for women when the men's bodies were visible.
The findings suggest that vocal depth might primarily serve a dominance function rather than attracting mates. Physical appearance was found to be far more influential than vocal characteristics in shaping judgments, with voice manipulations accounting for only a small percentage of perceived differences.
