The ship, which was almost named "Boaty McBoatface" after a public vote, is equipped with a range of cutting-edge technologies to handle the harsh conditions of the Southern Ocean. This includes a dynamic positioning system that can keep the ship's position accurate to within a few centimeters, even in the midst of a storm. The RRS Sir David Attenborough will be carrying a crew of 30 as well as 60 scientists on board, who will be conducting long-term monitoring and exploring new research areas in the Antarctic.
In addition to scientific research, the ship will also be responsible for resupplying several Antarctic research bases, delivering essential supplies, food, and medicine to the personnel stationed there year-round.
