Chilean scientists have engineered a novel therapeutic suit made from copper and zinc, specifically designed to expedite the recovery of penguins after surgery. The suits are an adaptation of designs previously used for four-legged animals, modified for avian patients through a collaboration involving conservation centers and a textile innovation company.
Protecting surgical wounds on penguins presented a unique challenge due to their highly flexible necks, which can easily dislodge stitches or impede healing. The suits, though containing microscopic copper and zinc particles woven into the fabric, do not have a metallic appearance. These metals are integral to preventing bacterial, fungal, and mite growth during the recovery process.
Furthermore, the zinc component actively encourages the formation of new blood vessels, a crucial factor in accelerating the healing of damaged tissues. This technological approach has shown promise in enhancing recovery rates for penguins, particularly those injured by human activities like entanglement in fishing nets. The effectiveness of these suits was observed in trials with five penguins at a conservation center.
Chile is home to a significant portion of the world's Humboldt penguins, a species classified as vulnerable. Both Humboldt and Magellanic penguins, which inhabit Chile's central coast, are experiencing population declines. This innovative suit represents a critical step in aiding the rehabilitation and conservation of these vulnerable bird populations.
