Canned Salmon Reveals Ocean's Secrets
21 Mar
Summary
- Vintage canned salmon studied for parasites over 42 years.
- Roundworm abundance increased in Chum and Pink salmon.
- Parasites indicate a healthy, functioning marine ecosystem.

Canned salmon preserved for nearly five decades has provided scientists with a unique window into Alaska's evolving marine ecosystems. Researchers from the University of Washington examined 178 cans of salmon caught between 1979 and 2021.
The study, published in April 2024, focused on Anisakid roundworms, common marine parasites, found within the salmon flesh. These parasites, killed during canning, serve as indicators of ecosystem health.
Analysis revealed a significant increase in roundworm abundance in Chum and Pink salmon over the study period. Conversely, Sockeye and Coho salmon showed stable parasite levels. This suggests a thriving marine food chain for certain species.
