Betelgeuse Not Alone: Companion Star Finally Spotted!

Astronomers utilizing the Very Large Telescope in Chile have uncovered the most robust evidence to date confirming that the renowned star Betelgeuse possesses a companion star. This breakthrough marks the culmination of a hundred-year search to definitively establish Betelgeuse as a binary system, composed of Betelgeuse A and Betelgeuse B.
The red supergiant, visible to the naked eye and located approximately 650 light-years away, has long puzzled scientists due to its observed dimming. While a companion star, Betelgeuse B, was hypothesized around a century ago, recent observations have provided the clearest direct view yet.
Team leader Miguel Montargès expressed excitement, stating, "We have shown that Betelgeuse is not single; it is accompanied by a faint stellar companion." Unexpectedly, Betelgeuse B is not only present but also considerably more massive than anticipated, boasting two to three times the mass of our Sun.
This discovery was made possible by the VLT's SPHERE instrument, which employs a coronagraph to block the intense light from Betelgeuse A, enabling the detection of the fainter companion. Scientists are now working to confirm Betelgeuse B's existence and understand its potential influence on Betelgeuse A's future evolution.
Further observations are planned to definitively confirm the companion's presence and its impact on the red supergiant. The research detailing this significant finding was published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
