Barn Swallows Make Manipur Home: Study Reveals Shift
16 May
Summary
- Barn swallows may have permanently settled in Manipur's Imphal Valley.
- The birds' presence is linked to ideal local conditions and cultural beliefs.
- This marks the first documentation of a resident barn swallow population in Manipur.

Descendants of migratory barn swallows may have ceased their long journeys and established a permanent home in Manipur's Imphal Valley, according to a recent study. The research, conducted over 2022 and 2023, found no barn swallows in the surrounding hill districts but identified thriving colonies within the valley's Bishnupur, Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal districts.
The study suggests two primary reasons for this behavioral shift. Firstly, the Imphal Valley offers an ideal environment with a mild climate, abundant flying insects, and suitable structures for nesting. Secondly, the cultural significance of the barn swallow among the local Meitei community, who consider it a symbol of prosperity and good fortune, leads to strong protection of their nests.
This finding represents the first documented evidence of a resident breeding population of barn swallows in Manipur, expanding the known breeding range of the species within the Indian subcontinent. Researchers believe future studies using tracking devices and genetic analyses will further illuminate the origins and long-term presence of these birds in the region.
