Irregular Asteroids Pose Big Threat to Deflection Plans

Summary
- New simulations dramatically accelerate asteroid deflection modeling.
- Asteroid shape and orientation significantly impact deflection success.
- Precise detonation targeting is vital for effective asteroid nudging.

Scientists at Sandia National Laboratories have created a significantly faster and more detailed method for modeling asteroid deflection. This breakthrough simulation technique is over 1,600 times quicker than previous approaches, allowing for the exploration of more scenarios and asteroid types.
The enhanced simulations highlight the substantial impact of an asteroid's irregular shape and its orientation on deflection outcomes. Researchers found that the precise angle of impact from X-rays, potentially from a nuclear detonation, could alter a resulting velocity change by as much as fivefold. This underscores the critical need for exact precision in detonation placement.
Previous modeling often simplified asteroids as spheres due to computational constraints. The new method, however, accurately accounts for irregular shapes, revealing that even a seemingly symmetrical asteroid like Bennu could experience nearly twofold differences in deflection based on which side faced the blast. This development means we must be highly accurate in our targeting, especially given potential unknowns about an asteroid's composition and structure when time is limited.
