Artemis III Shifts Focus: No Moon Landing Planned
27 Feb
Summary
- Artemis III mission will now launch in 2027, skipping moon landing.
- New plan focuses on a low Earth orbit demonstration with Orion.
- Future moon landings possible with Artemis IV in 2028.

The Artemis III lunar mission, targeting a 2027 launch, will no longer include a direct Moon landing. NASA astronaut Jared Isaacman announced that the mission's focus has shifted to a low Earth orbit demonstration of the Orion spacecraft, which will rendezvous with one or both lunar lander providers. This revised plan aims to set the stage for future lunar landings.
Should this orbital demonstration proceed smoothly, NASA anticipates potential Moon landing opportunities with the Artemis IV mission in early 2028, followed by Artemis V in late 2028. The original Artemis program, announced in 2019, has seen its timelines for Artemis II and Artemis III repeatedly adjusted from their initial 2022 and 2024 targets.
