A significant funerary cache has been discovered by archaeologists beneath a burial structure at the historic Egyptian city of Heliopolis, also known as 'On' in biblical texts. The artifacts were found at the Panhesy tomb site within the Matariya archaeological section.
The unearthed collection features five pairs of earrings, believed to be crafted from gold, along with carved scarabs, cosmetic containers, and a copper mirror. This discovery is notable as it represents the first nearly complete funerary assemblage found in the area, dating from Egypt's Late Period through the Roman and Christian eras.
The Panhesy cemetery's historical importance is underscored by its use as a burial ground for prominent individuals across extended periods. This recent find builds upon earlier discoveries during the excavation season, including mudbrick and limestone funerary structures and fragmented coffins.
