A new search operation is underway to find Amelia Earhart's lost Lockheed Electra 10E, nearly 90 years after she and navigator Fred Noonan vanished in 1937. This 20th organized search focuses on the Taraia Object, an anomaly detected via satellite imagery in a lagoon near Nikumaroro Island, approximately 350 miles southeast of Howland Island.
Evidence supporting the Nikumaroro theory includes converging radio bearings from 1937 transmissions, human bone measurements suggesting a woman of Earhart's stature found in 1940, and 1930s artifacts like a woman's shoe and a freckle cream jar. Additionally, a photographic anomaly on the reef, the Bevington Object, may represent the plane's landing gear.
The Archaeological Legacy Institute and Purdue University are leading this expedition, utilizing a hydraulic dredge to examine the lagoon. If the Electra is located, a full-scale excavation is planned for the following year. Earhart had a significant connection to Purdue, serving as a career counselor and aviation advisor.
