Summary
- AI was used to reconstruct the appearance of a Pompeii eruption victim.
- The victim was attempting to escape with a bowl as protection.
- The man was carrying a lamp and 10 bronze coins when he died.

Archaeologists in Pompeii have employed artificial intelligence for the first time to reconstruct the likeness of an individual lost in the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The AI-generated image visualizes a man ducking with a bowl over his head, with the fiery volcano in the background.
This reconstruction is based on the recently unearthed skeletal remains of an adult male found near the city's southern gates. He was discovered with a terracotta mortar, believed to have been used as a makeshift shield against the volcanic debris.
Experts surmise the man died from a rain of volcanic rocks as he attempted to flee towards the sea during the eruption's second day. He was also carrying a lamp and ten bronze coins, according to the Pompeii Archaeological Park.
Head of the park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, stated that AI can significantly aid classical studies by offering more immersive visualizations of the ancient world. Pompeii, a once-vibrant city near Naples, remains remarkably preserved under volcanic ash and is a major archaeological site and tourist destination.
