AI Revolutionizes Spice Farming in India
17 Aug
Summary
- AI applications launched to aid spice production.
- New technologies licensed for cardamom and black pepper.
- Farmers to benefit from improved spice production techniques.

The Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) in Kozhikode has significantly advanced its outreach and technological dissemination efforts. This includes the recent launch of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled web applications and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bio Mountain Farmers Producer Company Limited, Kannur. This collaboration is specifically designed to bolster the adoption of advanced spice production technologies among farming communities.
The institute also introduced the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Toolkit, a R Shiny-based platform. This user-friendly tool simplifies complex sequencing data analysis, making advanced bioinformatics accessible to researchers with limited computational expertise. Furthermore, IISR has entered into a licensing agreement with Botagnix Private Limited for the commercialization of a novel granular formulation of Lecanicillium psalliotae for cardamom cultivation. Licensing agreements for the IISR black pepper variety, IISR Chandra, were also issued, promoting wider commercial use.
