AI Detects Kidney Disease Early
3 Sep
Summary
- AI tools assist in early kidney disease detection.
- Deep learning analyzes CT scans for kidney issues.
- 3D imaging platform assesses kidney tumor volume.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras), in collaboration with Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, have introduced a suite of AI-based tools aimed at the early detection and assessment of kidney diseases. These innovations offer a significant advancement in managing renal health.
The developed technologies include a predictive machine learning model that utilizes clinical data to forecast the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Complementing this is a deep learning system trained on over 12,000 images, capable of analyzing CT scans to classify kidneys as normal or identify cysts, stones, and tumors.
Furthermore, a 3D imaging platform has been created to reconstruct kidneys from CT scans. This tool enables precise measurement of tumor volume and the extent of kidney involvement, marking a step towards developing a 'digital twin' for kidneys. The collective goal of these AI tools is to aid physicians in earlier diagnosis, potentially slowing disease progression and minimizing the need for costly treatments like dialysis.
