Summary
- AI designed custom viruses to combat antibiotic-resistant infections.
- This marks the first human trial of AI-designed phage therapy.
- The treatment aims to drastically reduce the time to create new viruses.

Scientists have utilized artificial intelligence to design custom viruses for a patient battling a life-threatening bacterial infection. This marks a significant milestone as it represents the first human application of AI-designed phage therapy.
The experimental treatment, developed by Radical Numerics, involves viruses engineered by AI to specifically attack bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Phage therapy itself is not new, dating back over a century, but its AI-driven customization offers a novel approach to combatting the growing global threat of antibiotic resistance.
Researchers previously developed AI models like Evo 2, which generated thousands of virus genomes. Building on this, the company's Omnii model can design new viral genes, altering virus structures to enhance their ability to infect specific bacteria. This technology was applied to create T7 phages with modified legs capable of attaching to and killing stubborn E. coli.
Following successful laboratory tests and FDA authorization, the AI-designed phages were administered to a patient whose infection had resisted all available antibiotics and phages. If this trial proves successful, the AI-driven method could reduce virus creation time from weeks or months to mere days, accelerating treatment for severe infections.
