Octogenarian's Fitness Rivals 20-Year-Olds
4 Feb
Summary
- An 82-year-old ultramarathoner possesses the highest aerobic fitness ever recorded in an octogenarian.
- His cardiovascular capacity matches that of healthy men in their 20s and 30s.
- Scientists found his exceptional fitness inspiring, challenging aging assumptions.

At 82, Juan López García, a former car mechanic, has achieved remarkable athletic feats, including world records in the 50-kilometer ultramarathon and winning the world marathon championship for his age group. His journey began at age 66 when he first attempted to run a mile, an effort he could barely complete.
European scientists studying aging invited López García for extensive testing. Their findings, published in January, revealed his aerobic fitness is the highest ever recorded in an octogenarian, matching that of much younger men. His muscles demonstrate an exceptional ability to absorb and utilize oxygen.
López García's training involves running approximately 40 miles weekly, increasing to nearly double when preparing for competition. He also incorporates interval sprinting and weight training. His diet is described as a typical Mediterranean style.
