A World War Two veteran, Stan Woolley, was overwhelmed with joy after receiving more than 1,500 birthday cards for his 100th birthday. The appeal, initiated by the staff at Ivy Gate Lodge in Southport where he resides, gained significant traction on social media. Cards flooded in from numerous countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, alongside many from within the UK.
Woolley, born in Liverpool in 1926, served in the Royal Navy and later the Royal Marines during World War Two. Post-war, his career included roles as a police officer in the Palestine Police Force, managing a publishing company, and running a post office. The sheer volume and heartfelt nature of the messages, some from currently serving Royal Navy personnel, deeply touched him.
The care home also organized a large birthday party for Woolley, attended by approximately 98 guests. The outpouring of support has been gratefully acknowledged by his niece, Jackie Ryan. Staff plan to create a memory box and scrapbook to preserve some of the special cards.
