Los Angeles retains its title as the U.S. city with the most severe traffic congestion, as Angelenos spend over 8 hours stuck in traffic each week. A recent survey identified the MacArthur Maze near the Bay Bridge as California's most dreaded commute, surpassing Los Angeles' notorious gridlock.
Workers surveyed indicated a willingness to sacrifice an average of $3,220 annually to escape the I-80, I-580, I-880 connection. This figure excludes savings on gas and vehicle wear. The Hollywood Freeway in Los Angeles and the I-405 through Sepulveda Pass also ranked high, with commuters willing to give up thousands to avoid them.
The emotional strain of stressful commutes was a significant concern for one-third of respondents. Worryingly, 46% of those polled in a July 2026 survey stated they would decline a job offer due to a challenging commute, underscoring the profound impact on work-life balance.
