Thiruvananthapuram Streets Transform for Women's Midnight Celebration

On August 14, a significant stretch of Thiruvananthapuram, from University College Junction to Ayurveda College Junction, was dedicated exclusively to women as part of a 'Freedom at Midnight' event. The initiative aimed to provide a safe and empowering space for women to celebrate and express themselves after dark.

Women from various walks of life participated in the festivities, which commenced around 10 pm. They enjoyed activities such as street games, dancing, and shopping at stalls operated by women vendors. The event also featured performances by bikers, cyclists, skaters, and Kalaripayattu practitioners, highlighting a vibrant display of female engagement and talent.

Attendees shared positive feedback, with many expressing the importance of such platforms for women's safety and freedom. Cyclists noted the revival of 'Freedom at Night' gatherings, while bikers from the Travancore Royal Enfield Club felt privileged and safe. Some participants, like stall owner Hema Malini, were excited to share ideas and hoped for a positive beginning for women.

However, some suggestions for future events included wider participation through more inclusive timings and formats. Rohini, a student, suggested that extending the event or adjusting the late timing might encourage more attendees. The overall sentiment underscored a strong desire for continued safe public spaces that foster women's expression and participation.
