In a notable gesture of reform and empathy, five women inmates at Lalitpur District Jail in Uttar Pradesh observed the Karwa Chauth festival. The prison administration facilitated their traditional prayers for their husbands' long lives.
Special arrangements included mehendi, bangles, traditional clothes, and puja items, funded by the Prisoners' Welfare Fund. Two women were permitted to perform rituals alongside their inmate husbands, while three others completed their fasts after seeing photographs of their spouses on mobile phones.
Jail Superintendent Prashant Upadhyay emphasized that prisons are centers for reform, and respecting prisoners' religious and emotional needs is crucial. The jail regularly makes provisions for festivals like Raksha Bandhan, Eid, and Diwali, ensuring inmates can maintain cultural and religious practices.
This initiative highlights the prison's dedication to holistic rehabilitation, allowing inmates to uphold their traditions despite their incarceration and fostering a sense of community and connection.
