Women Lead Delhi RWAs, Redefining Community Power
8 Mar
Summary
- Women are taking leadership roles in Delhi's RWAs.
- These women are professionals balancing careers and civic duties.
- They are transforming RWAs into responsive, people-first platforms.

A significant shift is occurring in Delhi's Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs), as women, including many full-time professionals, are stepping into leadership positions. These women are actively dismantling the old perception of RWAs as merely spaces for retired individuals to manage minor civic details. Instead, they are infusing these associations with resolve, creativity, and a community-focused approach, transforming them into responsive, people-first platforms.
Leaders like Neha Puri in Green Park Extension and Dr. Ruby Makhija in Navjiwan Vihar exemplify this change. Puri, now RWA president, faced initial skepticism but her persistence in engaging with civic bodies improved local amenities. Dr. Makhija, an ophthalmologist, established a 100% waste segregation model in her neighborhood, which has become a benchmark for sustainable practices. These women demonstrate that effective civic leadership can be combined with demanding careers.
Lawyer Anantmala Potdar and interior architect Payal Kapoor also contribute their professional skills to RWA work in Saket and Safdarjung Enclave, respectively. They focus on practical solutions for issues like parking and education, and community park revamps. Their efforts highlight how organizational and coordination skills, coupled with goodwill, can effectively resolve neighborhood concerns.
