A metal detectorist in Lancashire has unearthed a peculiar "container spell" dating back to the late Georgian or early Victorian period. Alex Farrow discovered a small circular tin while working at a rectory in Ramsbottom, Bury.
Inside the tin was a folded note bearing a hand-drawn skull with a dagger through its head. This artifact is thought to be connected to witchcraft, potentially serving as a "container spell" to ward off negative spirits or to curse an intended recipient. The note's inscription, "THOU ART A MISDOER," translates to "you are a sinner."
Farrow, who has been metal detecting for five years, initially almost discarded the item as scrap. He noted the discovery's eerie quality due to its location overlooking the rectory. The find has been documented by a Find Liaison Officer, with hopes for its future exhibition in a museum in Bolton, Manchester, or Bury.
