Victoria Trails Get Ebike Boost: Ride More, Spend Less

Summary
- Ebike sales have tripled in early 2026 due to rising fuel prices.
- Victoria offers half-price public transport, usable with ebikes.
- New trails like Dixon Veloway enhance cycling safety and connectivity.

Bike trails across Victoria have undergone significant upgrades, with a particular focus on accommodating ebikes. This comes as ebike sales in Australia have reportedly tripled in the early months of 2026 compared to the previous year, a surge largely attributed to rising fuel costs. Retailers are finding it challenging to keep pace with this demand.
Victoria is making exploration easier with half-price public transport fares for the remainder of 2026. Ebikes can be transported on all metro and regional trains without charge, though space is limited. This initiative encourages riders to utilize the newly improved bike paths.
Notable upgrades include Melbourne's Dixon Veloway, a 2.5km elevated bike-only path opened in December 2025, providing a safe connection from the west to the CBD. The "green caterpillar" bridge, completed in April 2025, now allows for seamless cycling between Melbourne's southern and northern suburbs via designated paths.
Further enhancements are evident on trails like the Kororoit Creek trail, which has seen completed links and a new underpass for safer connections. The Lilydale to Warburton trail now features improved intersection safety and ebike charging stations. The Murray to Mountains rail trail received an $8.5m enhancement, adding a 31km extension and new bridges.
For advanced riders, Victoria's alpine region offers the Omeo mountain bike park with 114km of trails, including long gravity trails. While direct public transport to Omeo is challenging, shuttle services are available. Charging facilities are available in Omeo town. For most other trails, charging options can be found at local cafes, libraries, or dedicated stations.
