SD Suryanarayana Hegde, the revered founder of Bengaluru's popular Veena Stores, passed away earlier this week at the age of 87. His culinary establishment, located in Malleswaram, evolved from a humble condiment and coffee-tea shop into an iconic city landmark. Hegde established the store in 1977 after facing financial difficulties with his previous hotel venture, naming it after his daughter, Veena.
Initially, Veena Stores offered coffee, tea, and condiments, with idli being a secondary item. However, over time, the idli, served with generous portions of its distinct chutney, became the main attraction. This beloved eatery has become a cherished ritual for a diverse clientele, including students, families, workers, and expatriates.
Anand Raj, founder of Eat Raja in Malleswaram, shared fond memories of Hegde and his shop, highlighting the unique mint chutney and crispy vadas that have made Veena Stores a source of pride for the neighborhood. Suchitra Deep, founder of Malleswaram Social, also recognized the store as a landmark, acknowledging the dedicated service of both Hegde and his son, Pradeep.
