Couples in England and Wales will soon experience a significant transformation in wedding legislation, marking the most substantial reform in approximately 200 years. The government is proposing to move away from the current requirement for ceremonies to take place at approved venues, allowing for legally binding marriages to occur in a much wider array of locations.
Under these new proposals, couples could potentially tie the knot in diverse settings such as castles, beaches, or even on cruise ships, provided the location is approved by a registered officiant. The goal is to update "outdated" marriage laws to enhance affordability and offer couples more freedom in choosing their ceremony site.
However, the government has outlined a "dignity framework" to prevent ceremonies that might trivialize marriage. Activities like skydiving or rollercoasters will not be permitted, though light-hearted elements such as readings or sing-alongs may be allowed if they maintain a sense of dignity. Additionally, the consumption of food and alcohol during the ceremony itself will be restricted.
These reforms, stemming from a consultation ending on September 24, 2026, also propose relaxing restrictions on religious content in civil ceremonies and enabling non-religious belief organizations, like Humanists, to conduct legally binding weddings. Justice Secretary David Lammy stated these changes are necessary to align marriage laws with modern societal shifts and reduce wedding costs. The reforms are anticipated to be implemented next year following the necessary legislative process.
