- Over 7,000 old phone boxes transformed since 2008.

- A scheme allows communities to adopt kiosks for just £1.
Britain's beloved red telephone boxes are experiencing a remarkable revival, transforming from relics of the past into essential community infrastructure. Since 2008, BT's "Adopt a Kiosk" initiative has enabled communities to acquire decommissioned phone boxes for just £1. This program has seen over 7,200 of these iconic structures repurposed, breathing new life into local areas.
These former communication hubs are now serving diverse functions, including miniature libraries, art galleries, and, significantly, housing publicly accessible defibrillators. This innovative reuse has ensured that these recognisable landmarks remain part of the local landscape while providing valuable services. As of September 2026, over 7,200 kiosks have been adopted across the UK.
While many have been repurposed, a significant number of working payphones remain. Ofcom data from recent years indicated that millions of calls were still made annually from these public call boxes, including essential calls to emergency services and helplines. Consequently, regulations were updated in June 2022 to protect certain call boxes still vital for their communities.
