Eco-Conscious 'Binfluencer' Family Saves Thousands by Recycling
27 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Family's rigorous recycling routine helps them save thousands
- Recycling also protects the environment, a "win-win" situation
- Family named 'Britain's top binfluencers' for their eco-friendly lifestyle

In September 2025, a UK family from Bury, Greater Manchester, has been recognized as 'Britain's top binfluencers' for their eco-conscious lifestyle and impressive recycling efforts. The Lees family, led by 13-year-old zero-waste champion Tommy, have been recycling their household waste since 2019, when mother Gemma, 42, became more aware of the environmental damage caused by waste.
The family's rigorous recycling routine has not only helped them save thousands of pounds over the past six years, but it has also played a significant role in protecting the planet. Gemma, a Romani Gypsy whose community pioneered the rag-and-bone recycling trade centuries ago, says, "Not only are we helping save the environment, but we are helping save money too, it's a win-win."
The family's recycling efforts are so effective that their general waste bin can last up to 12 weeks without needing to be emptied. They have also made various eco-friendly swaps, such as using reusable kitchen roll, mop pads, and silicone sheets instead of disposable alternatives, saving them hundreds of pounds each year.
The Lees family's commitment to sustainability has earned them recognition from Biffa, the UK's leading sustainable waste management company, as they celebrate Recycle Week in September 2025. Gemma and her husband Chris, 44, hope their story will inspire others to make simple lifestyle changes that can benefit both their wallets and the environment.
