Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34. He ascended to the throne of Tooro kingdom in western Uganda in 1995 at the tender age of three, following the death of his father.
The Tooro kingdom has not yet disclosed the specific cause of King Oyo's death. However, local media quoted a Ugandan government minister indicating he had been critically ill and was receiving treatment in the United States.
Despite Uganda being governed by an elected president, traditional kingdoms like Tooro hold significant cultural sway. King Oyo ruled over more than two million people and was the 13th monarch of his kingdom, which dates back to the early 19th century.
Announcing his death, Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki conveyed that the passing was an "immeasurable loss" and urged the people of Tooro to remain united and prayerful. He also assured that the continuity of the monarchy is secured, with a Prince identified as the heir, whose identity will be formally announced in due course.
