Nonprofit Founder Revamps Beloved Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade

The 35th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is scheduled to take place on October 13, 2025, in New York City's Tompkins Square Park. This beloved event, which has been a tradition for over three decades, is undergoing a transformation this year.

The parade is now being organized by a new nonprofit, the New York Dog Parade, founded by author and canine columnist Fern Watt. Watt, who has been attending the parade with her dog for years, recognized the need for a more formal organizing team to handle the event's growing popularity and size.

Under the New York Dog Parade's leadership, the 2025 event will feature some exciting changes. Four adoptable dogs from organizations like Pup Starz, Social Tees, and the ASPCA will serve as Grand Marshals, and there will be a new activation block on Sixth Street where attendees can enjoy treats and other surprises for their canine companions.

The signature costume contest, which Watt describes as the "Met Gala of the canine community," will continue to be a highlight of the parade. However, the number of entries will be capped this year to prioritize the dogs' comfort and safety.

The parade's organizers are dedicated to maintaining the event's East Village community feel while also accommodating the growing number of attendees. Watt and her team have been working closely with the community boards to ensure the parade remains a safe and joyful celebration of the bond between dogs and their owners.
