Blind Cockatoo Soars to Therapy Pet of the Year

Boo, a remarkable 41-year-old umbrella cockatoo, has achieved a significant milestone by being named Pet Partners Pet of the Year. This marks the first time a bird has received this honor. Boo's journey is one of extraordinary resilience; he was once blind and neglected, suffering from feather loss due to another bird's plucking.

Despite his severe challenges, Boo exhibited a profound capacity for connection, particularly with his human companion, Amy Hurst. Following a groundbreaking surgery that restored his sight, Boo was certified as a therapy animal by Pet Partners in 2025. He has since become a beacon of comfort.

Boo's work involves visiting hospitals, senior communities, and schools, providing emotional support to individuals with autism, disabilities, and those in therapy programs. Hurst also established the Prism Bird Program to connect neurodivergent children and individuals with emotional issues to birds, recognizing their unique intelligence and ability to provide sustained companionship.
