Summary
- Annual relay strengthens Syilx identity and connection.
- Over 120 runners completed the 300+ km relay.
- Run fosters healing from colonization and violence impacts.

The Syilx Okanagan Nation Alliance's annual Spirit of Syilx Unity Run recently concluded, celebrating its role in fostering identity and connection. Held from June 4-7, the relay saw over 120 runners and 200 participants traverse more than 300 km from Mica Dam to Needles, B.C.
The event, initiated in 2009 by youth seeking to unite against violence and suicide, offers a crucial space for healing. Participants connect with Syilx lands, practice ceremonies, and build relationships while honoring lost relatives and sending prayers for healing.
Runners carry a youth staff adorned with three feathers representing the past, present, and future, symbolizing the nation's strength and resilience. This year's run also honored Twi cewe'lna, a cultural leader deeply involved with the relay, whose prayers previously paved the path for participants.
