One of Sunderland's oldest buildings, a former tyre shop on High Street West, is undergoing a £1.4 million transformation into a community hub. The revitalized space, to be known as The Friends Meeting Place, will be managed by the Sunderland Quakers. This marks the Quakers' return to the Sunniside area after an absence of over a century.
Funding for the extensive renovations was a collaborative effort, with Historic England contributing over £900,000 and the Quakers providing £515,000, raised partly by selling their previous meeting house. The early 1800s building, which previously served as a bank, will see its traditional shopfronts and timber sash windows restored. It will include a dedicated room for worship and additional retail units alongside spaces for local organizations.
This project is expected to significantly contribute to the regeneration of the city center. It aligns with the ethos of social action by creating a valuable resource for the community, including organizations like Space North East, which supports men facing loneliness and mental health challenges. This development builds upon recent successes in breathing new life into Sunderland's historic buildings.
