Seafront Libraries Spark Reading Renaissance
7 Sep
Summary
- Four artistic Little Libraries installed on Sunderland seafront.
- Visitors can borrow, exchange, or replace books by the sea.
- Project supports the National Literacy Trust and Year of Reading.
Sunderland's picturesque seafront has welcomed four innovative Little Libraries, transforming sections of the coast into accessible literary hubs. These artfully decorated book cases are strategically placed at The Seaburn Inn, The Tram Shelter, Adventure Sunderland, and the Marina. The project, a joint effort by the city's Seafront Volunteer Group and Sunderland Seafront BID, invites the public to borrow, exchange, or donate books.
Each library is a distinct work of art, created by Su Devine of Sunderland's Art Cafe, and receives support from the National Literacy Trust. This initiative is particularly timely, coinciding with 2026, designated as the National Year of Reading across the UK. Roberta Redecke from Sunderland BID noted the overwhelmingly positive response, highlighting how the libraries enhance the seaside experience for everyone.
A "Look For the Book" treasure hunt is also planned for October 3, 2026, adding another layer of engagement for visitors between Roker and Seaburn.
