Old Mortuary to Become Chic Holiday Home

A unique property in Staffordshire, the former mortuary of the North Staffordshire Asylum, is being considered for conversion into a holiday let. The building, which dates back to the late 19th century and closed as St Edward's psychiatric hospital in 2002, has been derelict for many years. It was sold at auction in 2023 for £137,000 after attempts to secure it failed due to persistent anti-social behaviour.

Proposals have been submitted to the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council to transform the unassuming single-storey structure into a two-bedroom holiday home. The envisioned layout includes two bedrooms, one with an ensuite, a bathroom, and a combined kitchen and lounge area. The planning statement emphasizes that the reuse of the deteriorating listed building offers significant heritage benefits.

Conservation efforts will focus on sympathetic improvements both inside and out, preserving the building's character and appearance. This redevelopment aims to safeguard the historic structure from further decay and negative uses, offering a positive new chapter for the site. The initiative is part of a broader effort to redevelop the former asylum grounds for residential use.
