The swimming pool at Southwell Leisure Centre has reopened, marking a significant moment for the community after being closed for nearly three years. The facility's closure occurred in October 2023 following a major water leak, which subsequently became the subject of a disagreement between Newark and Sherwood District Council and the Southwell Leisure Centre Trust.
While the council proposed a new £5.5m leisure centre, the trust advocated for repairing the existing pool. This impasse led to the council withdrawing its funding in May 2024. The centre is now jointly operated by Creative Futures, Parkwood Leisure, and the trust, which financed the pool's £700,000 repair project.
Trust chairwoman Jo Harbord expressed her delight at the pool's return, noting its positive impact on residents of all ages. For the duration of the closure, swimmers had to utilize facilities in nearby Newark, Ollerton, and Bingham, with many uncertain about the pool's future. The refurbishment ensures a revitalized facility for the town's residents.
